Now you can dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medications throughout the year. The Tigard Police Department is pleased to provide the community with a new and convenient Med-Return box in the police lobby, open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Abuse of prescription pain-killers now ranks second to marijuana use as the nation’s most prevalent illegal drug problem.

Tigard Police partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration over the past year by participation in the nationally held Drug Turn-In events. Over 1,400 pounds of pharmaceuticals were collected as a result of the past three collection events held in Tigard.
It became evident the community wanted options to safely dispose of unwanted prescription medications. To that end, Chief Orr began steps to bring a more timely and convenient option to Tigard residents.

Acceptable disposal items include: prescription medications and samples, all over-the-counter medications, vitamins, pet medications, creams, ointments and liquid medications in leak-proof containers.

The drop box is not suitable for thermometers, syringes, IV bags, bio-waste, aerosols of any type, inhalers and Epi-Pens. The drop box is not intended to receive large quantities of pharmaceuticals from health care facilities.

Free rides on New Year’s Eve, plus extra late-night MAX service

All rides on TriMet’s buses and MAX will be free beginning at 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve - Saturday, December 31.

Buses and MAX will run on regular Saturday schedules, and MAX will provide extended late-night service.

"I would like to write a post for my neighborhood blog about a cat I found. There has been a black cat hanging around my house for 3 or 4 weeks. It is very affectionate, friendly, handsome and hungry, so I know it belongs to someone and is not feral. I think it is a male. It's all black except for a very small wisp of white on its chest and has green eyes.

I live on Alberta Street, just off SW 121st Ave. near Walnut. I am going to bring him to my vet to be scanned to a chip."

Tigard Police Searching for Hit and Run Suspect

Tigard Police investigators are asking the help of the public in efforts to identify and locate the driver of a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run which seriously injured a motorist. Police have information possibly indicating the suspect vehicle which struck the victim and his vehicle may be a 1998-2002 Honda. Vehicle parts strewn in the area of the scene indicate the suspect vehicle is a carbon-gray color. The suspect vehicle will have damage to the passenger side front fender and bumper.

The incident took place at approximately 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning, November 12, 2011, on the shoulder of the ramp leading from southbound Pacific Highway to northbound Highway 217 in Tigard. The victim was attempting to change a flat tire when a vehicle came along and struck him. A roadside service employee, who was dispatched minutes earlier, found the victim and called 9-1-1. The victim, a 32 year-old Beaverton man, was transported by ground to OHSU. His present condition is unknown.

TriMet's Night Stop drops riders at safe spots

Now riders can get closer to their destination after dark

TriMet began its Night Stop program with the end of Daylight Savings Time in an effort to keep customers safe during winter’s darker months. A courtesy stop/Night Stop allows riders to ask the operator to drop them off at a safe location along the route other than a designated bus stop to get them closer to their destination.

NIGHT STOP GUIDELINES

• Let the operator know a block or two ahead of the destination, and the operator will determine if there is a safe spot for the rider to get off the bus.
• If the bus is turning left in the same block as the requested stop, the rider may be let off the bus after the turn is made.
• The service is available anywhere outside Portland city center and the Lloyd District between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
• Service is for drop-offs only; riders still need to board at designated stops.
• TriMet operators will not make an unscheduled stop where it is not safe to do so, such as on a freeway or ramp, where there is a ditch or other hazard to exiting the bus, or where there is potential for the bus to block other traffic.

BE SEEN, BE SAFE

Riders may be hard to see after dark and can take steps to increase visibility:

• Wear bright-colored or reflective clothing.
• Wave as the bus approaches.
• Wave a reflector, safety strobe light, small flashlight or cell phone display light to alert the operator as the bus approaches. Some mobile devices and third-party applications have a strobe or light feature for this purpose.
• Please, DO NOT shine lights in operators’ eyes.

Tigard's Free Prescription Discount Card Program

Tigard started participating in this free program in August, 2009. As a member of the National League of Cities (NLC), Tigard is able to offer residents a free card that helps them battle the high cost of prescription drugs – especially nice for those without health insurance or residents that have prescriptions not covered by insurance.

Between August 2009 and September 2011, resident have used their card on 483 prescriptions and saved $7,991. The program is administered by CVS Caremark. There’s no enrollment form, membership fee or restrictions/limits on the frequency of use and it’s accepted at all major pharmacy chains and most local independent pharmacies. Pick up your free card at the Tigard Library, City Hall or on-line at www.tigard-or.gov/community/prescription_discount_program

It doesn't take a lot of time, but it is a lot of fun!

Neighborhood web pages are designed to serve as the primary communication tool and information center for neighborhoods to strengthen connections among neighbors and with the city.

Neighborhood web pages are managed by volunteers who are trained by city staff. Having residents manage pages for their neighborhood ensures information is relevant to their unique interests and issues.

There are content guidelines, such as no commercial advertising. Much of the content is provided by the city, but web administrators are not limited to using only this material, and the website administrator chooses what to post.

Do you have what it takes to share information, ask questions and connect with the city and specifically, your neighborhood residents in Area 10? Here's what it takes:

1. Live in Area 10 Neighborhood Boundaries: bounded on the north by Walnut Street, the east by Pacific Highway (99W), and the west and south by Gaarde Street. On a clear day, this Tigard neighborhood has a breathtaking view of Mount Hood from atop the hill on the south end of Gaarde.

2. A desire to get involved in your community: one of the best things about the Neighborhood Network program (and this blog) is that you can do much of it from home and city staff will show you how. Only one meeting is required per year (usually in the fall) and the benefits to your community are great!

The neighborhood Web administrator position is fun and easy. So whether you're the sole administrator or you join with friend(s) to serve as part of a team - or make it a project for the whole family - it's a great way to get connected to the community you call home.

It's Now Illegal to Trash that Computer or TV!

Since January 1, 2010, it's been illegal to dispose of computers, monitors or TVs in the garbage or at disposal sites such as landfills, transfer stations and incinerators.

This disposal ban is part of the same law that created Oregon E-Cycles, which provides free recycling of computers, monitors and TVs at any of the program’s 220 collection sites statewide. The law states that anyone violating the ban could receive a penalty of up to $500 for each violation. Each computer, monitor or TV disposed of improperly is considered a separate violation.

Visit Oregon E-Cycles to find a conveniently located collection site or call the toll-free hotline at 1-888-5-ECYCLE (1-888-532-9253).

Recycle Your Garden Pots

Your garden starter trays and pots are made of recyclable plastic! Far West Fibers in Beaverton and Hillsboro (www.farwestfibers.com) and Pride Disposal (www.pridedisposal.com) offer plastic pot drop-off recycling sites all year-round. Garden containers accepted include plastic nursery pots up to five gallons, seed and carrying trays, and tin plastics (cell packs, 4” pots). Please rinse clean prior to drop-off.
